StoryMaps use technology to tell a holistic story that lets us understand data in new ways. CIESIN uses geospatial data, satellite imagery, field data, GIS, and machine learning to identify and map where people live, particularly in small and remote communities that may be missing from existing maps. Using the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as an example, the StoryMap walks through the process of creating detailed settlement maps and shows how improved settlement data can support health services, humanitarian response, and more informed and equitable planning.
