Mines and Quarries of Indigenous Peoples in the Shadows of the New York Metropolitan Area

Indigenous peoples possessed a profound intimacy with the natural landscape, including the whereabouts of finite quantities of much desired raw materials. Their abilities to engineer rock, and extract from the Earth's surface, served to define a “folk geology,” as evidenced by recovered objects dated from as early as 13,500 years.
