Lecture: Time is deep—how do we know?

Speaker: Alberto Malinverno

1:30 PM

The universe is about 13 billion years old, and the Earth formed 4.5 billion ears ago.  These time spans are immense compared to human history.  How did we come to realize that time is so deep? I will review the development of the idea of deep time starting from simple geological observations, progressing through radiometric dating, the history of reversals of the Earth’s magnetic field recorded on the ocean floors, astronomical cycles in sediment sequences, and concluding with recent research.
